Living in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia
A local guide from the Assist 2 Sell, HomeWorks Realty team in Dartmouth – helping buyers and sellers across the Halifax Regional Municipality since 2001.
What Is It Really Like to Live in Eastern Passage?
Eastern Passage feels like a small seaside town that just happens to be 15 minutes from downtown Dartmouth. It sits right at the mouth of Halifax Harbour, so the ocean is part of everyday life here – you see fishing boats heading out, ships coming into the harbour, and McNabs and Lawlor Islands across the water. People say hello at the gas station, kids walk to school, and a lot of families have been here for generations alongside plenty of newcomers.
The heart of the community is Fisherman's Cove, a restored 200-year-old fishing village on Government Wharf Road. It's still a working harbour, with a boardwalk lined with colourful little shops, take-out windows, ice cream, fresh lobster and Boondocks restaurant with its big deck on the water. Right next door, MacCormacks Beach Provincial Park has a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk loop with benches, picnic shelters and some of the best views of the Halifax skyline you'll find. Locals walk it year-round.
For more outdoor time, the Shearwater Flyer Trail starts in Shearwater and runs out to the Salt Marsh Trail, and Rainbow Haven Beach and Silver Sands in nearby Cow Bay are a short drive away – great for summer evenings. Every August, the Eastern Passage/Cow Bay summer carnival brings the whole community out, sandcastle contest and all.
Day-to-day errands are easy: there's a pharmacy, a small grocery, an NSLC, gas, coffee and a handful of pizza and take-out spots along Main Road and Cow Bay Road. For a big grocery run or bigger shopping, most residents head to Cole Harbour or Dartmouth (about 10–20 minutes).
Getting around is simple. Most people drive, but Halifax Transit Route 6B connects Eastern Passage to the Bridge Terminal, and you can catch the Woodside ferry for a scenic ride to downtown Halifax. Junior high and high school students get a free transit pass. Many military families also call the area home thanks to 12 Wing Shearwater next door.
The honest trade-off: you'll drive for major shopping, and coastal weather can be lively. In return you get the ocean on your doorstep, a real neighbourhood feel and, in most cases, more home for your money than closer-in Halifax neighbourhoods.
