What It's Really Like to Live in Bedford, Nova Scotia

Bedford sits at the head of the Bedford Basin and is often described as one of HRM's most desirable family communities. It feels polished, safe and organized. Streets are well kept, sports fields are busy every evening and weekend, and you'll often see neighbours walking dogs along the waterfront at sunset. It's a quieter, more suburban lifestyle than Halifax, but downtown is still about 15–20 minutes away.

There are really two Bedfords. Established Bedford, along the Bedford Highway and in neighbourhoods like Eaglewood and Bedford South, has mature trees, larger lots and homes built from the 1960s to the 1990s. Some have basin views or waterfront access. Bedford West, around Larry Uteck Boulevard and Kearney Lake, is newer and denser, with modern two-storey homes, townhouses and condo buildings close to new schools, shops and restaurants.

Outdoor life centres on the water. DeWolf Park and the Bedford waterfront boardwalk are the community's gathering spots for summer concerts, the Bedford Days festival and evening walks. Admiral's Cove Park has one of the best basin lookouts in HRM at Eagle Rock, and Hemlock Ravine Park, Paper Mill Lake and Kearney Lake are close by. Families spend a lot of time at the BMO Centre's four ice pads and the LeBrun Centre.

Bedford is mostly car-oriented. Highway 102 and the Bicentennial Highway take you downtown, and Highway 101 takes you toward the Annapolis Valley. The Bedford Highway is scenic but can be slow at rush hour. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is about 25 minutes away, and Halifax Transit offers express routes to downtown.

Everyday shopping is easy at Sunnyside Mall, Bedford Place Mall and the shops around Larry Uteck Boulevard and Bedford Commons, and Bayers Lake is about 10 minutes away. Buyers usually choose Bedford because they want strong schools, safe neighbourhoods, newer homes and waterfront parks, and they're comfortable paying a bit more for that combination.
